Family Farms in an Era of Global Uncertainty

Well-known and respected ag economist John Ikerd shared his passion as well as his perspectives about agriculture, family farms, the environment and sustainability in presenting the 2008 Shivvers Memorial Lecture. The Leopold Center was pleased to facilitate his presentation, "Family Farms in an Era of Global Uncertainty," on February 24. If you missed it, you can listen to the podcast or read his written comments at: http://www.leopold.iastate.edu/news/pastevents/ikerd/ikerd.htm.

The grower of trees, the gardener, the man born to farming,

whose hands reach into the ground and sprout,

to him the soil is a divine drug. He enters into death

yearly, and comes back rejoicing. He has seen the light lie

in the dung heap, and rise again in the corn.

His thought passes along the row ends like a mole.

What miraculous seed has he swallowed

that the unending sentence of his love flows out of his mouth

like a vine clinging in the sunlight, and like water

descending in the dark?

Cloned Meat...

I only wish they would give us the opportunity to make this choice, unfortunately, cloned meat is not required to be labeled so the food buyer will never know what they are eating... (ignorance is bliss... and more profitable for the BIG guys)
